The Centre for Pacific Studies is both an academic unit and a focus for activities that encourage an understanding of the Pacific Islands and debate on issues of concern to Pacific Islanders in New Zealand and in the Island homelands.
Pacific Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Pacific region and its peoples. It allows for the comparative study of the cultures, performing arts, languages, art, literature, history and linguistics of the Pacific. It is now an internationally established field of study with programmes at undergraduate and graduate levels being taught in the USA, Samoa, Australia, Japan, Russia, Fiji, and other parts of the world.
The Centre is based in the Fale Pasifika complex and offers its own mentoring and support programme for all Pacific students. As well as offering its facilities to all students, the Fale complex is a home for Pacific staff and students on campus and a powerful affirmation and celebration of Pacific indigenous knowledges and cultures. It is also a centre of excellence for Pacific research, teaching and service, and its traditional Fale provides a space for discussion and support as well as teaching and learning
