Welcome to the History Department
History encompasses every dimension of life in the past. In studying history and developing knowledge and understanding of the past, you discover how the past influences the present and can shape the future.
As New Zealand’s largest history department, our research and teaching covers a wide range of historical fields and time periods. We have specialist expertise in New Zealand history, Māori and indigenous histories, pre-modern and modern Europe, United States history, and the histories of Asia, Australia and the Pacific. The Department has particular strengths in sexual histories, the history of medicine, the medieval and early modern world, and transnational and comparative histories, and we house the New Zealand Journal of History, the leading historical journal published in New Zealand.
Our staff are known nationally and internationally for their accomplishments in research, teaching, and graduate supervision. We recognise the importance of international ties in today’s world and prioritise overseas collaboration and exchange. We have established links with leading research-intensive universities in North America, Europe and Asia and strongly support staff, PhD students, and MA students in conducting research abroad and presenting at international conferences.
