 The Centre for Development Studies
The Centre for Development Studies is a cross-faculty, interdisciplinary  graduate programme located in the Faculty of Arts.

The University of Auckland was ranked at number 30 in the world for social sciences in the 2008 THE-QS World University Rankings.

The core staff are few in number but the flexible programme allows for students enrolled in Development Studies to draw on the expertise of staff throughout the University.

 Our Research Experience

Regional research experience is extensive in the Pacific and Asia and growing in Latin America, Central Asia, and Africa. While our PhD students are currently mostly working in Asia, we have a steady flow of successful MA students working in variety of countries in key development issues.

Our research students come from New Zealand, the developing countries in Asia, Central Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific, as well as from developed countries in North America and Europe. They are from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, ranging from the core based on the social sciences to the humanities and physical sciences such as engineering, planning and architecture.

 Our Graduates

Most MA graduates return to developing countries to work various roles in government or civil society.

Since 2001, the  Centre has seen a rapid increase in the number of students graduating with research based degrees.

Read the profiles of some of our alumni and discover how they make their marks on the world.
