Classics & Ancient History

Ancient Rome, ancient Greece and ancient Egypt are the three broad areas available for study in this Department.

Roman history is taught within the subject of Ancient History.
Roman literature, art and architecture, thought, mythology, and other cultural achievements are taught within the subject of Classical Studies.
Latin, the language of the Romans, is taught as a subject in itself. 
Greek history is taught within the subject of Ancient History.
Greek mythology, literature, art, philosophy, and other cultural achievements are taught within the subject of Classical Studies.
Ancient Greek language is taught as a subject in itself. 
Egyptian history, art, and culture are taught within the subject of Ancient History.
Ancient Egyptian language can also be studied within the subject of Ancient History.

There are no prerequisites required in order to begin studying Stage 1 courses in any of the subjects offered by the Department.

Each of the subjects (Ancient History, Classical Studies, Greek, Latin) may be taken as individual courses, or as majors within the BA, and are available for postgraduate study (where Ancient History and Classical Studies are amalgamated).

Classics Research 


The Department of Classics and Ancient History runs regular seminars for the presentation and discussion of research by staff, graduates and visiting speakers. 


University of Auckland Students represent Classics and Ancient History at Egyptologists Conference at Monash University Postgraduate students Caleb Hamilton, Chip McKenzie and David Stewart were chosen to speak at Monash University, Melbourne.
